Barbados with Kids: Family-Friendly Boat Trips
By Captain Dwayne 3 min read
A boat trip is one of the highlights of a family holiday in Barbados. Spotting a turtle, jumping into clear blue water and speeding along the coast are the kind of moments kids talk about for years. With a bit of planning, it can be just as relaxing for the grown-ups too.
Why the west coast suits families
Barbados has two very different coastlines. The east coast faces the Atlantic, with big waves and strong currents. The west coast faces the Caribbean Sea and is usually calm, warm and clear, which makes it ideal for younger swimmers and first-time snorkelers.
Why a private charter works well with children
Big group cruises run to a fixed schedule, which doesn't always suit nap times, short attention spans or the need for a sudden bathroom stop. On a private charter:
- You set the pace. Stay longer where the kids are having fun, and move on when they're not.
- It's just your family. No worrying about noise or disturbing other guests.
- The crew focuses on you. They can help nervous swimmers and keep an eye on everyone in the water.
- Every age is catered for. Teenagers can try water skiing or the towable donut while younger children paddle or watch from the boat.
Our boat, Livity, takes up to 8 guests, so it's a good fit for a family or two travelling together.
Safety first
- Life vests are provided for every guest, including child-sized vests.
- Snorkel gear is provided too.
- Children of all ages are welcome. There is no minimum age.
- Non-swimmers are welcome and can snorkel in a life vest with the crew nearby.
- Children should always be supervised by an adult in the water. Your crew is there to help, but parents know their kids best.
Water sports for kids
The towable donut (1-2 riders) and towable "Mable" (up to 4 riders) are a hit with older children and teenagers, and paddleboarding is a gentler option in calm water.
Tips for a happy family day on the water
- Go in the morning. The sea is often calmest early, and kids have the most energy.
- Protect against the sun. Use reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and a long-sleeved rash guard. Children burn quickly on the water.
- Plan snacks and water. Soft drinks are included, and familiar snacks keep little ones happy. Let us know when you book if you would like to bring your own, or we can arrange food for you.
- Bring a towel and dry clothes for each child.
- Talk about the turtles beforehand. Explain that they're wild animals: we watch, we don't touch. Kids love being "turtle protectors".
- Keep it short for little ones. Charters are booked by the hour, so you can choose a length that matches your children's attention span.
- Remember the no-shoes rule. Flip-flops that slip off easily make boarding simple.
